家长和学生要了解美国高中,除了实地参观访问,最好认真阅读学校网站的每一个页面,了解学校宗旨和日常活动细节。我们综合了几所寄宿高中的学生手册翻译成中文,并加以解读,帮助家长和学生全面了解美国高中。
只推荐家长考虑寄宿学校,如果家长不去陪读的话,也就是:学生住在学校的学生宿舍(不是寄宿家庭模式),一日三餐吃在学校食堂的模式。
单纯从各种硬件设施看,优秀的私立走读学校、优秀的公立学校,与私立寄宿学校差距不大,但考虑到人均就差距很大了。更由于受校车时间限制,或者寄宿家庭接送条件限制,绝大部分走读学校的学生很少参加学校的各种课外活动,这样即便最好升入了理想的大学,我们也认为高中生活不完美,家长的花费不值得。
Advanced Placement
AP课程
Students wishing to take Advanced Placement (AP) courses must have the permission of the appropriate department Head and the Dean of Academics. Every student who is enrolled in an AP course is expected to take AP examination for that course in May.
学生选修AP课程必须得到相应学科的头和主管学术的教导主任的批准。每一个进入AP课程的学生都被要求参加5月份的AP考试。
解读1:国内有些国际学校开设了AP课程,但往往做不到分层教学,往往是一个班齐步走,统一上某一门或几门AP课,因为课程并没有分 Regular、Honor、AP三档。
这种情况的原因,一方面是师资问题,一方面是学生需求同质化。
解读2:很多家长考虑高中不出国去读美高,高中阶段考虑国内公立高中国际部国际班或者国际学校,这种情况下,建议一定不能放松英语能力的提升。
孩子初三正常中考完,高一(相当美高10年级 / Form IV)就上AP课程,不要说用英文来学大学一年级入门课程,就是用中文来学都很有挑战,难度可想而知。
这种情况下,大部分国内读高中的学生还比去读美高的同学少上一年,对孩子的压力也不轻松。
去读美高的大陆学生往往会降一个年级,给学生一个适应过程,即便托福100+。(类似,陆军团长调到空军,应该先适应一段,不能直接继续当团长啊。)
解读3:部分美国高中认为AP课程过于关注应试,不利于学习掌握知识,于是提供自己的 Honor 荣誉课程 或者 Advance 课程。请看一段是一所学校的课程说明
Instead of Advanced Placement courses, CCS offers challenging, in-depth, weighted college-level courses that we designate as “Honors” courses.

The Advanced Placement curriculum is a standardized curriculum that places limits on what teachers can teach and on what schools can offer. In the end, an AP teacher is forced to teach to the test that looms in May. Too often, AP courses become exercises in preparing for the exam. Too often, teachers have to sacrifice the deep investigation and connections that engender curiosity and true learning for the sake of test content.

Our Honors courses share with the AP rigorous preparation for college learning, but focus more on depth of content and quality of thinking than on coverage of content. Thus our courses are often thematic and emphasize making connections in content rather on content itself.

AP courses are not necessary for college admission! Colleges and universities are aware that Honors courses at Christchurch are college-level courses that are equivalent in their eyes to AP courses. These are what students need to get into college. In addition, we are finding that many colleges and universities are moving away from granting credit for AP examination scores.

第一所学校的荣誉学生定义
A student who receives a grade average of B or higher, with no grade of D or E and no minus effort grade, will have honors designation for that marking period.
如果学生在一个评价周期内得到平均成绩B或者以上,并且没有D、没有E、没有不太努力的评价,就可以得到该评价周期的荣誉学生称号。
A student who receives a grade average of A- or higher, with no grade of D or E and no minus effort grade, will have high honors designation for that marking period
如果学生在一个评价周期内得到平均成绩A-或者以上,并且没有D、没有E、没有不太努力的评价,就可以得到该评价周期的高等荣誉学生称号。
第二所学校的荣誉学生定义
South Kent’s Honor Roll is determined at the end of each academic term (fall, winter, and spring).To achieve High Honors, a student must have no grade lower than an A-. ForHonors, a student must have no grade below B. Those students who earn thisrecognition will receive an award determined by the Dean of Academic Affairs.
荣誉学生将在每个学期结束(秋季、冬季和春季)确定。要获得高等荣誉,学生的成绩必须都在A-以上。要获得普通荣誉,学生的成绩必须都在B以上。学生处主任将颁发的相应奖项给符合要求的学生。

Students who distinguish themselves scholastically, through ability and effort, may be eligible for special recognition, based on the criteria listed below.

Honor Roll:Average of 85% or above, with no grade lower than 70%.

These three lists will be published at the end of each academic quarter. Students who have earned a place on one of these lists will be accorded special privileges, as determined by the Assistant Headmaster for Academics.

South Kent School believes that consistent effort in the classroom is the corner stone of successin its academic program. Each week teachers record effort ratings for all oftheir students, based on the following criteria:

The Effort Ratings let a student know his teachers’ views of the quality of his classroom work andthe effort that he put forth over the course of the previous two weeks.Students meet with their advisors weekly to discuss their Effort Reports. These reports are then availbe via the MyBackPack portal to the student’s parent/guardian. Effort comments and grades go live on the portal every Tuesadyat 12pm (EST) and close Friday at 9am EST.
勤奋程度评估让学生知道老师对他学习质量和努力程度的看法,并且能够让学生看到自己上两周在课堂上付出的努力。学生每周会与他们的指导老师见面讨论这份勤奋程度报告。这些报告对学生的家长/监护人是可见的。勤奋程度评估报告和等级会在每周四12pm公布,每周五9am关闭。
