Last Friday, students from the Koala Class of Nanchang International School embarked on a unique exploratory journey to the airport. This activity was closely integrated with their "Transportation" thematic unit studies, allowing the students to gain an in-depth understanding of airport operations through hands-on practice.

A Wonderful Experience at the Fire Station

消防站的奇妙体验

The first stop of the activity was the airport fire station. The firefighters warmly welcomed the students, showcasing various fire trucks and explaining their functions in detail. The students were even allowed to step inside the fire trucks to observe and experience the advanced firefighting equipment up close. The highlight was when the firefighters demonstrated how to use fire extinguishers and allowed each student to try operating one personally. This hands-on practice enhanced their safety awareness and deepened their understanding of the critical role firefighters play.

Exploring Terminal Operations

航站楼的流程探索 

Next, the students proceeded to the airport terminal. Airport staff patiently explained the entire air travel process to them. From seeking assistance at the service counter for inquiries, to check-in procedures and luggage check-in, then to important security check precautions, the students listened with great interest. The most exciting part was seeing the large airplanes parked at the airport – they marveled at the aircraft's sheer size and magnificence, gaining a more tangible understanding of air transportation through this immersive experience.

随后，同学们来到了机场航站楼。机场工作人员耐心地为同学们讲解了乘坐飞机的整个流程。从有问题去服务中心咨询，到如何取票、办理托运，再到过安检的注意事项，同学们听得津津有味。当然，最让同学们激动的还是看到了停在机场的大飞机，大家纷纷感叹飞机的庞大与壮观，对航空运输有了更直观的感受。 

Behind-the-Scenes Exploration of In-Flight Meal Preparation

机餐制作的幕后探秘 

At noon, the students enjoyed a delicious lunch at KFC. After a short rest, the afternoon schedule became even more exciting. They visited the company responsible for providing airport catering and explored the process of in-flight meal preparation. The stringent hygiene standards and meticulous preparation techniques gave the students confidence in the quality of the meals. Staff members also explained in detail how the meals are transported safely and efficiently to the airport via catering trucks. This behind-the-scenes look was an eye-opening experience, offering the students a renewed appreciation for the aviation catering industry.

中午，同学们在肯德基享用了美味的午餐，稍作休息后，下午的行程更加精彩。同学们前往给机场配餐的公司，参观了机餐的制作流程。严格的卫生标准、精细的制作工艺，让同学们对机餐的质量有了信心。工作人员还详细介绍了机餐是如何通过运餐车安全、高效地运达机场的，这一过程让同学们大开眼界，也让他们对航空餐饮行业有了全新的认识。

To conclude the experience, airport staff presented each student with thoughtfully curated gifts—a C919 aircraft model (China’s first self-developed large passenger aircraft) and commemorative refreshments. Holding these symbolic tokens, the students’ faces radiated joy and intellectual fulfillment. The day culminated in a collaborative group photo at the airport, capturing this transformative learning moment. Beyond acquiring transportation-related knowledge through experiential engagement, this interdisciplinary exploration ignited students’ curiosity about aerospace innovation and cultivated enduring inquiry mindsets aligned with IB Approaches to Learning (ATL).

Through this authentic inquiry-based learning opportunity, learners not only constructed interdisciplinary cognitive frameworks but also demonstrated growth in emotional regulation skills and collaborative social responsibility—key attributes of the IB Learner Profile.
